West 55th BA on Blogger

We use the Blogger and Twitter services (look to the right!) to keep the neighborhood informed of events and issues that affect our community.

Second Wave Launder Center Closing

The Second Wave Launder Center just put up a sign that they are closing their doors on Sept. 14, 2010. They have been great neighbors and provided excellent service for the past 20 years. Will post more if we learn any more details.

Wrong Way Traffic on West 55th Street

Watch out for traffic going the WRONG way for the next few days on West 55th Street. Look BOTH ways when crossing midblock or at the intersections.

Source of W55 Water Leak Still Unclear

I spoke with a couple of DEP workmen at 10:45 AM today. They say they still have not found the source of the leak, which has flooded the basement at 300 West 55th (on the south side of the block, not the north side as reported last night).

Roadwork on West 55th tonight

Was out walking the dog and saw that DEP had set up shop at the east end of the block. A DEP worker told me that water was leaking into the basement of one of the buildings on the northeast end of the block. They will know more after they finish jackhammering. The DEP guy figures they will be working until at least midnight tonight. Traffic has been detoured away from the block.

July 4 Block Party

Hello Friends and Neighbors,

50 People Enjoy Characters Happy Hour

We had a record turnout at the June 14 Happy Hour at Characters Bar on West 54th Street. Fifty people came and enjoyed the free pasta, Shepherd's Pie and good company.

One couple came from as far north as 97th Street. We also met new friends from 75th, 57th and 53rd Streets.
The back room of the bar is a great place for a gathering and owners Mike and Linda (she was behind the bar) served as gracious hosts the whole time we were there. The third owner, Finn, restored the beautiful 1930s bar.

ALERT: Road Construction TONIGHT, TOMORROW And Friday

Once again a set of signs has appeared on our trees giving us notice of night time construction tonight, tomorrow and Friday night. All cars are to be removed from 6 PM to 6 AM.

This time it looks like the DOT will be paving the street. A phone call to the DOT to find out about noise levels reveals that there will be rollers to smooth the gravel that they unload, trucks backing up and jackhammers.
